Vintage Judy Garland Photograph from the Sanford Roth Collection

A single black and white photograph of Judy Garland from the Sanford Roth Collection. In it, a mature Garland sits looking away, surrounded by the hands of the dressers, make-up people, and hairdressers that make up a large part of the off-camera life of most movie actors. This peek into the less glamorous, more routine aspect of fame allows the viewer to share in the reflective moment Garland was experiencing at that moment.

Sanford Roth was a globe-trotting photographer most known for the photographs he took of celebrities in their quiet moments, most notably James Dean. His photography graced the covers and interiors of many of the most popular and prestigious magazines in Europe and the United States in the mid-20th-century. Born in New York, he spent much of his professional life criss-crossing the Atlantic, living in many of the cultural and fashion capitals of the world. His photography is distinctive, portraying the rarely-seen, heartfelt moments in the lives of very public people. Roth’s photographs are in museums around the world, including MoMA. Mr. Roth died in 1962 while in Rome.
